Railroad stocks were strong', Industrials "weak. Money again declined abroad. Sterling; ex change was decidedly lower. Total sales of stocke were 455,000 shares, of bonds $1,673,000. The strength of London, pretty good buying by London and the belief that ho gold will go to that mar ket this week had a bracing effect here. Moreover, the Bank of England state ment today was a very strong one and foreign exchange was easier. St. Paul's unexpectedly large earnings strength ened that stock. For the second week of May this year the road earned $622,132, 1899 $637,931, in 187 $521,381, in 1896 $505,433, in 1895 $464,679, in 1894 $497,914, in 1893 $599,924. Chicago, bought. People's Gas. Northern Pacific was in good demand for foreign and local ac count and there was good buying of Pennsylvania and the Vanderbilts. Anaconda advanced on the settlement of the Quincy copper mine strike. The demand for railroad stock? which has given strength to the market-for a number of days past, has been satisfied ana prices fdii back today in that depart ment of the stock list. This is accepted fast mail-subsidy and the subsidy : fori in Wall street as confirmation of the the carrytinig'tof- mall between Kansas Oity and Newton, Kansas. A committee amendment struck out a part of the paragraph, relating to the railway mall service and provided for 1,632 clerks at $1,200 each; 3,605 clerks view that the demand rcame -from an outstanding short interest in the west and was not based on arfy underlying condition in the companies whose stocke were effected or in business at large. ' , I fluences. The outside public remains profound ly indifferent to the stock market and commission house business has fallen to practically nothing. St. Paul's statement of earnings for the second week in May, showing a small increase" over last year, was a distinctly favor able factor, as it was calculated to off set the apprehension caused by last week's return of a decrease for the first time since mid-summer of 1898. Last week's decrease was looked upon in Wall street as a sort of turninjg point in the railroad situation and a declining scale of earnings was ex pected, especially as the week's report of the movement of grain and of the west bound merchandise have been discouraging. Today's report showing the largest" earnings for St. Paul of any corre-sponding-ln its history, was a relief, but the resulting strength in the stock was not maintained. Rumors of the same ' kind as those which served the purpose of the bulls The final section xf .the bill, was a t senate committee amendment provid ; ing for the continuance of the com- mission to investigate the question 3 -whether or : not excessive prices are 'paid I to the railroad companies for the transportation of malls and as a com pensation forf postal car service, and all sources of revenue and all expendi tures of the postal service.
